Keeping Kids Safe

Full policy: Child & Vulnerable Participant Safeguarding Guidance.

The Basics

  • Anyone under 18 is a child for this purpose.
  • Coaches/helpers working with kids must be Police vetted first.
  • Avoid 1:1 situations where possible — if unavoidable, keep it in an open, visible area.

Physical Contact

  • Only what’s needed for safety or technique (e.g. adjusting stance).
  • Explain before you touch, and stop if a child seems uncomfortable.

Communication

  • Keep it professional — no private texts, calls, or social media with a child.
  • Copy in a parent/guardian, or use official club channels.

Transport

  • Avoid driving a child alone.
  • If unavoidable, get written parent/guardian permission first, and the child sits in the back.

If You’re Worried About a Child

  • Listen calmly. Don’t promise secrecy. Tell them they did the right thing.
  • Don’t investigate it yourself — pass it on immediately.
  • Report to the club’s Safeguarding Contact and record it (see Report a Concern).
  • Child in immediate danger, or it might be criminal? Call 111.
  • Non-urgent welfare concern? Oranga Tamariki — 0508 326 459 (24/7).
