Who’s Eligible

• Ages 11+ only. Under 11s go to U11 instead.

Ratios

• 1 Coach to 5 participants max.
• Prospective coaches help but don’t count toward the ratio, and can’t instruct alone.

Before Shooting

• Registration and waivers confirmed.
• Range set up per Range Operations Policy.
• Equipment issued and fitted by coaches — participants don’t self-assemble.

On the Line

• Short distances only, set by the Lead Coach usually 12m initially.
• Demonstrate first, then supervise closely — especially first shots.
• Arrow collection only on command, walking only.

What Happens Next

• An email will be sent to each participant with next steps.

If Something Goes Wrong

• Lead Coach can stop shooting at any time.
• Record incidents/near misses — see Report a Concern.

Purpose of This Guide

This guide explains how to run a Have‑a‑Go session on the day, safely and smoothly.
It supports Coaches and helpers to deliver a positive, well‑controlled experience.

Coaching Approach

• Keep instructions simple and calm.
• Safety and control come before shooting volume.
• Demonstrate first, then supervise.
• Be friendly and encouraging, but firm on safety.
• If something feels unsafe, stop immediately.

Staffing & Roles (On the Day)

• Lead Coach (Level 2 Coach)
  • Controls the range and whistle
  • Runs the safety briefing
  • Decides when shooting starts/stops
• Supporting Coaches (Level 1 or 2 Coach)
  • Assist participants on the line
  • Help with equipment fitting and supervision
• Prospective Coaches
  • Extra support only
  • Do not count toward ratios
  • Assist and guide only under direction

Before Participants Shoot

1. Confirm registration and waiver completion
2. Ensure emergency contact details are available
3. Set up the range:
   • targets secure
   • safety flags in place
   • warning signage displayed
   • waiting line established
4. Issue and fit equipment:
   • bow
   • arrows
   • arm guard
   • finger protection
5. Explain clearly:
   • waiting line
   • whistle commands
   • basic safety rules

Safety Briefing (Must Be Covered)

Keep it short and clear:

• No running
• No sky drawing
• Closed‑toe shoes only
• Shoot only when instructed
• Follow the whistle
• Stay behind the waiting line
• Walk to collect arrows

Do not proceed until everyone understands.

On the Shooting Line

• Demonstrate:
  • stance
  • bow hand placement
  • simple draw and release
• Bring participants forward in small groups
• Supervise closely — especially first shots
• Watch for:
  • nervousness
  • fatigue
  • unsafe arrow handling
• Use whistle commands consistently

Arrow Collection

• Only on 3 whistles
• Walk — no running
• Pull arrows carefully
• Return arrows safely before stepping back

During the Session

• Maintain full visual control
• Do not allow:
  • rushed shooting
  • joking on the line
  • distraction
• Stop immediately if:
  • someone steps forward early
  • equipment is dropped
  • public enters the range
  • behaviour becomes unsafe

Correct calmly, then continue if safe.

Pack‑Down & Finish

• Lead pack‑down:
  • unstring bows
  • count arrows
• Remove flags and signage
• Thank participants and direct any follow‑up questions appropriately

Key Reminder

Have‑a‑Go sessions are introductions, not lessons.
Your role is control, safety, and confidence — not technique perfection.
